ADAPTATION TO REGULATION 2022/2340 Green tea extracts

Deadline June 21, 2023 for updating the labeling of products with green tea extracts containing (-) epigallocatechin 3-gallate.

Operators in the human food sector are reminded of the need to update the labeling of their products containing green tea extracts containing (-)3-epigallocatechin gallate due to the expiration of the period granted by Regulation 2022/2340 that modifies Regulation 1925/2006 on the addition of vitamins, minerals and other certain substances to food.

Although the Regulation entered into force last December 2022, the deadline to adapt the labels of the products placed on the market is June 21, 2023. In this way, the regulation has made it possible to continue marketing products that were manufactured before the entry into force of the Regulation, and therefore are not compliant with it until that day.

As of this date, all products that are in this circumstance must comply with the requirements of this new standard.

Failure to comply with these requirements and the marketing of products without adapting and updating may lead to the imposition of sanctions.

Operators are reminded that this standard affects the entire European Union, so if necessary, the labeling and notification will also have to be updated in the countries where the products are marketed and notified.

Specifically, the most substantial modifications to be made are the incorporation of new safety warnings for correct use of the product, the need to indicate the content of (-)- epigallocatechin-3-gallate per portion of the food (which should not exceed to 800 mg daily) and the indication of the maximum number of portions of the food for daily consumption.
