Francia prohíbe el uso del colorante alimentario E171

Francia prohíbe el E171

Finally, and since January 1, 2020, the use of food coloring E-171, or titanium dioxide, has been banned in France in products for human consumption and use.

Much has been said and debated on the subject so far, including the opinion of the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA), but still with the conclusions drawn, the National Agency in France on Health, Food Safety, Environment and Labor (ANSES), has taken the decision to prohibit the use of this additive, as a precautionary principle.

The topic is not controversy-free, since this additive, today is an authorized additive pursuant Regulation 1333/2008 on food additives, which includes the authorization of its use and the conditions for it in many categories of foods, including food supplements indeed in quantum satis.

Thus, this decision establishes and marks a normative difference in food products according to whether they are going to be sold in France or in another country of the European Union, clearly leaving the operators of the sector who want to market their products in that country and who must adapt their formulas to this new demand in disadvantage.

The reason that has led ANSES to make this decision comes from the idea that there is not enough certainty in the safety of use of this additive due to the presence of nanoparticles in it that may be harmful to the consumer.

For practical purposes, the function of this component is none other than aesthetic, since it gives foods in which a white appearance is used. This is useful, among others, in the coverage of capsules and tablets in which so many food supplements are presented.

In the case of food supplements notified in France prior to this date, and that contained said colorant, you must make a notification of modification to communicate the new formula.
